Show CHILD STRUCK Bl BAMBERGER A sad uccident occurred yesterday1 afternoon on the Bamberger line near Orchard when the threo year-old daughter of John Zito was struck by a train and suffored tho loss of her right arm between the wrist and the elbow and fracture and bruises to the left leg. The child is now in the Dee) hospital undergoing surgical care and reported to be doing as well as can be expected. j According to Attorney DoVino. counsel coun-sel for the company, the child was walking in the tracks with two other girls, aged respectively about 13 and 15. in tho direction of Ogden along the double tracked way. The two older girls were walking ahead of tho train when the crew noticed that one of them was turning back and attracting their attention to tho little one in the double tracks. Despite the fact thai the brakes wero put on immediately and overything possible done to stop, the train continued to move on a down grade and running on slippery frozen rails made it impossible to stop before be-fore the accident occurred. Nel Allon. a shop foreman who was a passenger on the train along with Richard Peirce, superintendent of the Oregon Short Line, crawled out on the plough and was instrumental in saving sav-ing the child from death by stretching stretch-ing forward and pushing her to one side. Unfortunately he was not able to get the little one clear of the line altogether and she suffored the Injuries Injur-ies noted above. |
