Show Minister to Sweden Reports Germany Not on Verge of Starvation. WASHINGTON, ScpL 9 Germany is not on the verge of starvation, Ira Nelson Morris, American minister to Sweden, said today in reminding the American people that every energy must be put into the war. Mr. Morris said his statement re-! garding the food situation was based on many reports from relinble sources which had reached him at Stockholm. It was prompted by many published reports regarding conditions in the German omplre which had come to his attention since he recently returned to the United States. "There can be no question," the minister said, "that there Is a shortage of most of the essentials of life, but to state that this borders on the verce of starvation is erroneous and misleading. mislead-ing. There is no doubt that in many parts of Germany there is a marked scarcity of food and that the civiliun population has been reduced to the minimum ration, but still receives sufficient suf-ficient for subsistence. Conditions are better in the rural districts, particular- ly as regards the farmers and land j owners, even in the northern part of j Germany where the scarcity is most felt. In the southern part conditions improve still more nnd resorts and I hotels there still serve meals at mod- i erate prices. In the case of the army, ' there has been but slight deprivation; this has been fed at the expense ol the civilian population." |
