Show AN ARMY OF YOUNG BOYS. When this war Is over, some o tho things which our experience has taught us will be of lasting benefit and, perhaps, in great part compensate the nation for its sacrifices. One source of good will be the thrift stamps, which may have come to stay. Another will be the lesson in frugality fru-gality which conservation has brought to many homes. A third will be a deeper love of country and a higher regard for the liberty conferred. Fourth, the disciplining of the young men and boys of the nation. President Wilson has called on all American boys of 16 years and over, not permanently employed, to enroll in the United States Boys' Working Reserve. Beginning Monday, a week will be devoted to enrollment. The president in urging enlistments, says: "I sincerely hope that the young men of the country, of 16 years of age and over not now permanently employed, em-ployed, and especially tho boys in our high schools, will enter heartily into this work and join the Boys' Working Reserve, in order that they may have the privilege, for s,uch I believe It to be, of spending their spare time in a productive enterprise -which will certainly cer-tainly aid the nation to win the war by increasing the means of providing for the forces at the front and for tho maintenance of those whose services are so much, needed at home." Following up tliis appeal Governor Bamberger has Issued a proclamation appealing to tho young boys of Utah to place themselves at the services of their country by offering to help do the home work of the nation. While their big brothers are at war, the youngsters at homo are to take their places on the farm, in the shop or at the counter. This will form a mighty Industrial reserve to be drawn on after school hours and during holiday holi-day periods. And the best feature of It all Is that . the boys are to be made to realize they havo an important part to play in helping to make the world safe for democracy. From this war our young fellows will emerge better disciplined, better equipped to perform peaceful service. One of tho sins o this country has A been the failure to train young boys to be useful and helpful. |
