Show oo HEAVY LOSSES FOR THEWS PARIS, Dec. 27.- Artillery fighting J continues on the Verdun where the French yesterday broko up two German Ger-man attacks, the war office announces. Following is the statement: "On the right bank of the Meuse (Verdun front) the artillery battle continues con-tinues on the front north of Cauriercs wood. "Information now at hand shows that the attack carried out yesterdny by the Germans in this region was very violent. After strong artillery preparation the eimmy sent forward two shock battalions. They were dispersed dis-persed by the French fire. In the second sec-ond attempt parts of the enemy troops succeeded in approaching our positions posi-tions but were immediately ejected in a spirited engagement. "The enemy dead remaining on the ground between the lines and in the wire entnglemcnts demonstrated tho importance of the losses suffered by the Germans, who left prisoners in our hands." German troops yesterday attacked the French defenses northeast of Verdun Ver-dun on the east bank of the Meuse at Caurieres wood on a direct line north of Douaumont, the famous key point of the battle of 191G from which it is slightly less than two miles distant. Two attacks followed a violent bombardment. bom-bardment. The effort, according to the Paris reports, was a sanguinary failure. In the last attack the enemy succeeded in reaching the French lines. He was Immediately ejected, however, losing heavily in killed, wounded and prisoners. |
