Evans who Is considered a foremost health authority, appeared in tho Chicago Tribune, November 27. The article is written for tho purposo of enlightening enlighten-ing those who think that the. Influenza Influ-enza epidemic would long since have waned had tho authorities allowed whisky to flow abundantly aa formerly. former-ly. Tho following are extracts from tho subject: "At tho time of the beginning of tho epidemic, I was rocclving a lot of letters about tho uso of whisky in treating Influenza at different army and navy posts. The stories had so much similarity that they seemed to me as coming from tho same source. Then tho source began to come to light. An editor sent me a letter which he had received from a wholesale whole-sale liquor organization, asking them to give publicity to somo boiler plate stuff enclosed. It seemed that editors edit-ors had been flooded with this stuff with requests to run. The copy purported pur-ported to bo an article taken from a Providenco paper. There was about six columns of this matter. It extolled whisky In the treatment and prevention preven-tion of influenza and told of several carloads of whisky shipped by the government to Camp Devens. About this time clippings, or rather facsimile roprints, of an alleged telegram from Washington to tho Milwaukee Journal began to come In. This was the same Btory In several of its details, but tho whisky mentioned had been shipped ship-ped to Camp Meade. Another story 1 appeared, supposedly from a Baltimore! paper and tho carloads of. whisky according ac-cording to this story had gone to Camp Leo. "Tho press matter was sent out by liquor dealers organizations on their own letterheads. "If this whisky were distributed among tho men in these camps, It would amount to about 10 drops for each man. "I have watched medical journals for the proof that medical authorities wero advising whisky for Influenza. I could not find it. It appears that, In tho judgment of somo military surgeons, sur-geons, a few of tho sick needed whisky whis-ky in small doses, but that this was also the exception, and it is not regarded re-garded the best practice for even the minority of cases. The word went out strong. A good many hundreds of people used whisky because the army and tho United States govornmeni were using it. Who told them so? The liquor Interests. Nuf sed. |
