Show RATFS ANHTHFR , PHILADELPHIA, May 19. Local fans are beginning to suspect that the Athletics havo unearthed another J. Franklin Baker. Ray Bates, former Cleveland outfielder, has come back Into the big show again with Connie Mack's Athletics, and In addition to flawless fielding he has been hitting tho ball so hard and timely aa to look like Home-run Baker at his best. When Bates played with the old Cleveland Naps and later tho Cleveland Cleve-land A. A. team he showed that ho was a star in the field and also tho owner of a beautiful arm. Fow players ever tried to beat Ray's throws to tho plate. But his hitting was never strong enough to keep him employed in a big league outfield and he also was hampered with weak arches that frequently slowed down his speed on tho bases. Bates seems to have been cured of tho bum feet, however, now that he is playing for Connel Mack, and there is no doubt that his batting has improved a great deal. In the first week of the present season he made five hits for a total of ten bases and sot a now record by driving ih six runs in one game and five of them in one inning. The five runs in one inning, of course, were made on ono of the unusual occasions oc-casions when Bates had two turns at bat. Bates' long swats havo boon very popular with Athlotlc fans and in fact with fans throughout the east If he continues his slugging feats he will look like anothor Frank Baker. So far he has managed to make moBt of his longest drives at times when there was some one on the bases to appreciate appre-ciate them |
