Show GET READY FOR CONFLICT. That the people of the United States should be made ready for all eventualities by some method of universal uni-versal service, is urged by the Ohio society, which causes the New York Globe to say: "If this country is to prepare adequately ade-quately to meet all possible eventualities, eventual-ities, to furnish protection to the lives and property of the 100,000,000 persons per-sons within its borders, it must have a large reserve force composed of men who are not ignorant of the methods of modern warfare, and the only way to obtain such & trained army is to make a certain amount of military service ser-vice obligatory. The Ohio society accepted ac-cepted the only sane view last night in adopting ihe following: "Resolved, That while all should stand ready to volunteer, if voluntary volun-tary service is called for, yet congress, con-gress, in providing for our common com-mon safety, should not adopt emergency measures only, but should definitely recognize t h principle that the duty of defending defend-ing the nation rests equally upon all citizens capable of service; lhat the burden of safeguarding the country should no longer be cast exclusively upon the loyal National Guard and upon other patriotic military and naval volunteers, volun-teers, but that congress should ox-1 ox-1 ercise its constitutional power to raise and support armies by establishing estab-lishing Immediately a permanent and democratic system of national defense based upon universal service ser-vice and training under direct and exclusive federal control. "It is not jingoistic to say that the time has come when we should cease flattering ourselves into a sense of false security. Let us continue to preach the Golden Rule, but we must be ready to enforce our rights upon those who may refuse to respect them. Pacifists who would have the United States continue to stand naked and unarmed among the other world nations are as much enemies of their country as the foes without its gates." |
