Receding at times, tho waters that poured down out of Markham gulch roso again repeatedly, defying the efforts ef-forts of a hundred tollers to keep them from working damago to many of tho scores of residences and some business properties situated below tho mouth of tho gulch In tho main canyon. can-yon. Washed from tho residence of Gilbert Brown, a bedstead and cook stovo went tumbling and bumping along In tho clutch of tho flood. Damage Dam-age to tho extent of $3,000 was done to three residences owned by A. L. Heaston. Tho main floor of tho offices of-fices of the Utah Power and Light company, in tho Canyon Hall building, wero flooded with a foot of water and soveral inches of mud deposited. Resort to Dynamite. Only when dynamlto had been used to clear out the debris clogged In the flume that carries the stream from Markham gulch was the flood diverted from the lower floor of the building, which Is just south of the mouth of the gulch In the main canyon. Flooding of tho homes of Frank Harden and William Erickson has forced their abandonment. Finally diverted di-verted from the homo of Gilbert Brown, tho stream left behind about three feet of mud piled about upon tho carpets and furniture. The home of G. E. Phelps, situated across the main canyon from the mouth of Markham Mark-ham gulch, was flooded and tho cellar filled. The main stream of Carr fork broke Its flume boundaries this morning and inundated the road until tho children of the locality could not get to school until a lato hour. Fifty men were put to work by tho Apex Mine company and tho stream curtailed, but it broke out Into the roadway again tonight and the work had to he done over again. Shifts of Men at Work. Joining intlio effort to control the water from Markham gulch and protect pro-tect such residences as had not already al-ready been reached, the Bingham Coalition Co-alition Mines company detailed a force of seventy-flve men to the work today, to-day, the men working in shifts of eight hours each. oo |
