Show II HHi INDUSTRY WILL BE ' I 1 BOOSTED TO SUPPLY THE i DEMANDS OF OGDEN PLANT 1 "Weber county and the Interraoun- I , tain country must raise more hogs," I today said an official of the Ogden ; Packing & Provision company. "To maintain our great industry on a prof- it-making basis for both the hog-grow- 'I ers and the packers, at least 300,000 i . marketable hogs should be raised f within 150 miles of Ogden jn the next j three or four years. "This year it will probablv be nec- 1 essary for the packers to buy hogs j in Nebraska to operate the plant to 4 something near capacity, despite the ft unjustly high freight rate. We must pay 81 cents per 100 pounds on hogs !l brought from Nebraska, which is at least 30 cents too much. The rate from Nebraska to Portland is only 85 I cents. I ' Railroads' Motive. 5 To all the pleadings "of the Ogden jjf packers for a square deal, they say, the railroad officials had the nerve to $ explain that if the rate were lowered to a live-and-Iet-live level to the inter- J mountain country, the railroads would lose the business of shipping cured :t meats into this rich section. $ The Ogden packers, being men of j action, having faith in the good sense F of the public once the situation were j explained, defied the railroads and.in- formed them that they would develop the hog business in the intermountain ji country. Suiting the action to the I .. word, the packers immediately began a campaign of publicity. Thev appealed, ap-pealed, they say, to one of the strone- : est motives to which men will re- spond material interest, the pocket, !; Campaign a Success. Farmers wno were enthusiastic for the new Industry, but lacking funds, were supplied with a financial start. In every practicable way they were ; taught how to raise hogs succcssful-; succcssful-; ly. Success was satisfactory, say the t packers. Last year more hogs were f raised in this section than could be t 1 fUy taken care of, because Portland had an adequate supply of hogs, throwing the Idaho porkers into the J intermountain market. ; The Ogden packers kept enlarging i (heir plant and next year It will have a capacity of -100,000 head. The 6up- ply will be short at least 100,000, they predict. A large part of the hog supply will not be available for this market because Ogden must compete with the coast cities. Pig Clubs Planned. The packers are now perfecting a plan, in connection with the various governmental machineries, to induce boys and girls to organize pig clubs. The plan is expected to reach the children chil-dren of 10,000 farmers. Young thoroughbred thor-oughbred pigs will be distributed. The packers will sustain interest by continually con-tinually advising the young folk how to raise the hogs successfully and obtain ob-tain the maximum profit, Thev also will buy the pigs at maturity 200 pounds. The farmers, observing the experimental experi-mental success of their children, will scratch their pates and exclaim, "Why didn't I start raising hogs long ago?" Thus inspired they will get into the business, using intelligent methods. That's the packers' idea. They say it will be productive of enormous good. As the industry develops, the qual- ity of the Intermountain hog will be Improved, giving uniform breed. E Expending Large Sums. The packing company Is expending M this year more than $300,000 on plant wl improvement and equipment, and M ?100,000 is being expended on the new stockyards. These improvements H will make the Ogden packing plant M and stockyards the largest west of jg Omaha. The arrangement of the units pa I is sucn tnat the plant will have a ga I curing capacity of 1250 ihogs per day, I while the killing capacity is for 3000 H hogs daily. As soon as the swine sup- B ply meets present needs, the packers pS , say, other facilities will be added, M reaching the maximum capacltv of R 3000 hogs, which will be as large as ffl any of the Omaha plants. gS Two hundred men are now grading, $ concreting and installing piping and 9S sanitary sewerage, rushing the work H as much as possible. Eg Several eastern commission firms m are now making arrangements for an 3 extensive business and branches of eg the Ogden Packing & Provision com- Eg pany are being established through- ffl out the United States and in England, m |
