Show MIGRATE SOUTH FOR TIMER Transcontinental Travel in Automobile Getting to Be Quite Common Roads Much Better. According to Chairman David Jovce of the A. A. U. Touring Board who never hesitates to try out a doubtful route, the past two years have witnessed wit-nessed the commencement of real automobile au-tomobile touring In this country. While It is not contended that motor-ists motor-ists before that period had not moved about, the point is that after all, with here and there an exception, the aver, age owner really only made trips of limited mileages and territory compared compar-ed with the tours made in 1915 and 1916. "Previous to last year a transcontin-entalist transcontin-entalist was looked upon by friends as either foolhardy or exceptionally rash,"'says Chairman Joyce, "but 1915 saw more thousands cross the contin-, v..... iu iutuiuuuiies man nau toureu a stretch of three or four states less than five years ago. Thore were many) who freely predicted the expositions; on the Pacific coast were the be-all i and end-all of that class of touring and that this year would see only an occasional straggler. Yet all reports' made to the American Automobile association, asso-ciation, the national clearing-house of touring Information, from the various across-the-country route centers show that, in place of a dimunition, there has been an increase over each oft the half dozen routes extending fromt' ocean to ocean. J "There is also a like condition oft travel flow between the north and tlieji so'uth. that saw its real beginning in t noticeable numbers last fall. Previoual to that time there was a venturesome one now and then who braved the re- ported road horrors, only to find tho' trip was free from hardships although presenting some discomforts. But road i improvements in the south were so many in 1915 that the A. A. A. touring j bureaus, both in New York city and at the national headquarters in Tashj ington, handled more cars last fall and this spring than all previous years combined. This year has seen many miles of improved road added to the route, with the result that, early as it is, the inquiries for routft information and maps to Florida Juw the gulf coast points indicate that the entire motoring north is preparing to migrate south for the winter." oo |
