Members of the resolutions committee commit-tee which is to draft a statement of the election policy of the National Woman's Party, in conference here, wore selected today. upon tho arrival of tho Arizona delegation near the end of the morning morn-ing session, the conference increased tho membership of the resolutions' committee to twelve. Bertram Slppy, Illinois; Mrs. Harriet Stanton Blatch, Kansas; Miss Hazel Hunkins, Montana; Miss Mabel Vernon, Vern-on, Nevada; Dr. Francos Manion, Oregon; Mrs. Don Coray, Utah; Mrs. Francis Axtoll, Washington; Dr. Francis Lane, Wyoming. A flurry of oxoltement ran through the conference hall when Mrs. Dora Phelps Buoll of Colorado, known as a supporter of tho movomeut to endorso Mr. Hughes, presented the sub-motion. Mrs. Margaret Kessler, also of Colorado, seconded the motion. A long delay and considerable contusion con-tusion ensued while a program for taking the vote was reached. Efforts to "-decide by a standing vote failed because many spectators had been unable un-able to find seats. After several women who, under the rules of the conference, were not entitled to vote had been so advised by the chair, the suggestion of Mrs. Robert Kerr of Colorado that only those with badges lUUKllEU VULCIO SUUUIU UCUUC lilt motion was acted upon by a count of raised hands. "The vote is forty for and forty-one against," Miss Mabel Vernon, national na-tional secretary first announced. "Oh, I forgot to vote myself," she added rastily. "The vote is forty for and forty-two against." A motion to reconsider was overruled. over-ruled. Mrs. Kerr, in the roll of peacemaker, peace-maker, then submitted a motion to enlarge the committee to be named by the chair and to consist of a member mem-ber from each suffrage state represented repre-sented and it was unanimously carried. car-ried. Roast President Wilson. Mrs. Bertha Fowler, Colorado chairman, chair-man, in calling the conference to order, or-der, termed President Wilson's attitude atti-tude toward the movement of women's wo-men's suffrage as "one of cynical contempt" and political expediency. Women wlio endorsed the plan to secure se-cure suffrage by states, she said, were "political doormats of designing politicians." Miss Anno Mnrtin. national chair man, then took the chair and the conference con-ference call was read by Miss Vernon. The platform and order of business provided that only members of the ' party holding official positions in the Women's Party were entitled to vote. As soon as the method for the selection se-lection of a resolution committee had been decided and order restored the conference proceeded with a discussion discus-sion of the present status of the national na-tional suffrage amendment. Sharp differences regarding the manner man-ner of selecting a resolutions' committee com-mittee to draft a statement of the election policy of the National Woman's Wo-man's party developed at the first formal session of the national conference confer-ence here today. A sub-motion that the committee consist of twelve members mem-bers Instead of five as at first proposed pro-posed and tha the members be selected select-ed by each state Instead of by the national chairman was lost by a vote of 40 to 42. An amendment intended as a compromise com-promise was immediately passed in creasing the personal of the committee commit-tee to eleven one from each suffrage state represented and tho original motion was then passed unanimously. Miss Anne Martin, national chairman,, chair-man,, announced the selection of Mrs. William Kent of California as chairman chair-man and said the names of the others would be selected later. nn |
