Show Imlkms bf ii STATE IE MING TO HUE "Witli the task of harmonizing the two factions in the Republican party left to the new state chairman, who, in all probability, will be appointed today by the sub-committee of five appointed by the state committee in the Hotel Utah in Salt Lake last night, the attention of Weber county Republicans is now turned toward the subject of outlining a program for the reception of Charles E. Hughes, the presidential nominee, on his visit to the city August 24. A letter from W. R. Wilcox, chairman chair-man of the Republican national committee, com-mittee, forwarded to the Republican state committee by Senator Reed Smoot from Washington and read at the session in Salt Lake last night, stated that Mr. Hughes would arrive in the city over the Southern Pacific from Reno., at 11:55 a, m., will leave at 4 p. m. for Salt Lake, arriving there one hour later and remaining In that city until midnight when he will resume his journey eastward, going to Cheyenne. No definite arrangements have been made either in Ogden and Salt Lake for his visit. A personal representative repre-sentative of Mr. Hughes, A. N. Rod-way, Rod-way, will be in Ogden and Salt Lake a week before to confer with Utah Republicans about the preparations for the visit. In the meantime Republicans of Weber We-ber county are going ahead with whatever arrangements might be made to make the visit of the presidential presi-dential nominee the occasion of a great Republican rally in Ogden. It has been suggested that Lester Park be made the center of activity Mayor Abbot R. Heywood said the park was especially desirable because It would afford more people an opportunity to see Mr. Hughes than any hall or theatre the-atre in the city. More persons also would be able to hear the nominee should he deliver an address. Traveling with Mr. Hughes are his secretary, Laurence H. Green; Carl D. Shepard, publicity secretary; Charles Farnham, in charge of the train two messengers and three stenographers. Glon Miller, a warm friend of Gov- rernor Spry and the man Avho placed his uame before the state convention on Tuesday, was proposed for state chairman. He was opposed by supporters sup-porters of Nephl L. Morris, the Republican Re-publican candidate for governor. They sought to seat George M. Cannon. Ernest Bamberger was mentioned as a possible compromise. He refused to accept on the ground that, while he is a Republican, he did not like the embarrassment of conducting the campaign against his uncle, Simon Bamberger, who is a candidate for the Democratic nomination. Subcommittee Work. It is said also that Mr. Miller will not accept the state chairmanship, if It is offered to him. If he rejects It, wl-.lch his friends say he is certain to do, the subcommltee of five and tho candidates will confer again and figure out what other Republicans ' might fill the dual role of harmonizing harmoniz-ing the factions in tho Republican party and conducting a vigorous election elec-tion campaign at the same time. The subcommittee of five was appointed ap-pointed at tho outset of the meeting at the Utah last night of the state committee members and the candidates. candi-dates. It comprises: Fred W. Price and Lon J. Haddock, members from Salt Lake county; C. R. Hollings-worth Hollings-worth of Weber; J. H. Gardner of Utah, and Christopher Burton, Jr., of Davis county. The committee agreed to leave the selection of the state chairman to this subcommittee, in co-operation with the candidates. United States Senator George Sutherland Suth-erland was chosen to preside last night as temporary chairman. H. L. Cummings, secretary of the old committee, com-mittee, was present and will serve until the new secretary is named, Lon J. Haddock, one of Mr. Morris' chief advisors and committeeman from Salt Lake county, has been mentioned men-tioned as a possible secretary of the committee.
