More to Mr. Clayton's satisfaction, satis-faction, however, the suspected thief, knows as Carl Vickcrs, Is now carefully care-fully housed by Sheriff John S. Cor-less. Cor-less. The story of tho theft and recovery of Mr. Clayton's automobile could be adapted to some scenarios of the "movies." First, of course, and In the darkness of tho night, the machine mysteriously disappeared. A few days afterward, with officers watching In every direction for tho missing machine, ma-chine, Deputy Sheriff Charles E. Wood brought out a clue that led him to tho banks of the surplus canal a few miles west of the city. The deputy's search was rewarded with the salvage salv-age of several parts of an automobile, which wero Identified by Mr. Clayton as having been essentials to his missing miss-ing carr. There tho search was halted, In the absence of any further trail, until yesterday Mr. Clayton Just happened into the Roslund machine shop on West Temple street. About tho first thing to meet his wandering gaze was a roadster being converted Into a speedster. Another look or two and there came the recognition of the machine. ma-chine. At the same time, however, another recognition took place when the mechanism happened to look up and saw Mr. Clayton recognizing the machine. Almost simultaneously there was a patter of feet over the board floor and the mechanician was seen disappearing out of the rear doorway The mechanician was rccognlzpd as Carl Vickcrs and the sheriff's office and police were Informod of th discovery of the machine and man. Yesterday afternoon Patrolman H. Warden spied Vlckers on West Temple Tem-ple street, took him Into custody, notified no-tified Deputy Sheriff Charles E. Wood and an hour later Vlckers was an inmate in-mate of the county jail, with an lm-( nendlng charge of grand larceny over him. Vickcrs, who has had a former ac-auaintance ac-auaintance "with the police and sheriff's sher-iff's forces, was non-committal last night and sulked in his answers. |
