Dick visits 1 Manila, Philippine Islands, and goes B on a hunting trip. In the village of H Hollo, live Nina Rosarlb and Carlos R Fulano, "a scoundrel, who forces his v attentions on Nina. Dick engages i H Carlos aa a guide. Dick is seized' i with fever, Carlos deserts the young officer. Nina stumbles across Dick, helps him to her home and nurses him (back to health. Dick's gratitude grati-tude turns to loc and he marries Nina. Carlos learns of the marriage and vows vengeance. He discovers her alone and. forces Nina to accompany him into the jungle Dick believes that Nina has fallen over the cliff and hor body carried out to sea. Re-rintung Re-rintung home, Dick finds a letter there ordering him to join his regi- ' ment at once at San Francisco. Dick s departs, leaving with 'Nina's -father, a piece of paper which instructs that if Nina's body is found, Rosarlo is to notify Lieut. Dick Bates or Gon. James Bates, at the Presidio of San Francisco, Calif., U. S. A. Carlos carries Nina into the jungle. Nina seizes a stone, knocks Carlos senseless and escapes. Carlos regains consciousness and star in pursuit. Nina reaches her home safely. When she hears that Dick has left, ibellcvlng she is dead, the girl Is distracted. Later, a son Is born to Nina and she names tho boy Dicardo. Fifteen years pass, Dick Is now. a captain of his regiment at San Francisco. Fran-cisco. The regiment is ordered to sail for the Philippines. Nina and her bon, now a fine looking boy of 15, lives In Ilolio. Ricardo announces that he is going to join the Filipiono in-surrectos. in-surrectos. Nina begs Ricardo not to Join tho rebels. Tho boy insists and the mother finally gives In. The regiment regi-ment arrives at Manila and Dick and his company attack tho insurgents. Ricardo, being a good shot, is sta-tioued sta-tioued behind a stone as a sharpshooter. sharp-shooter. The boy fires several times at Dick, seeing that ho is an officer, and finally succeeds in shooting away tho captain's hat. Later Ttfina and Dick como face to faco. Tboy recognize each other. Nina, agonized, tells Dick that I ho sharpshooter is his son. That night, Dick sits in his tent struggling between be-tween his dovotion to duty and his love for Nina and his new found son. Ho writes his resignation from the army and goes to his home and family fam-ily in Uolia. |
