Jonathan Hoi- land, 81 years of age, the man who ; taught Germanj- how to convert raw j rubber gum into various forms of commercial com-mercial rubber, the first Mormon mis i sionary to Germany and an inventor of note, died shortly after midnight yesterday at the home of his daugh-ter, daugh-ter, Mrs. H. G. Smurthwalte, 1521 Gar field avenue, from the infirmities at. tondant upon old age. i Mr. Holland was born in England, February 2C, 1833. At an early age he began work in tlvo Mcintosh rubber ' plant In Manchester and soon became a rubber expert of great prestige. In ! 1S76 ho went to Hanover, Germany, to take charge "of the largest rubber works in Germany. ' While a young man In the employ of tho Manchester rubber works, Elder El-der Edward Snellgrove of Salt Lake, then in England, commissioned him a missionary to the Germans. |
