Show H ; 00 H CLOSING THE OGDEN H GATEWAY. B There is a fight on between the B Union Pacific and Denver & Rio B Grande railroad for the traffic of the B intermountain country. The Union B Pacific has main lines and branches B extending to all the important points H in this region. The Rio Grande's H trackage ends at Ogden. Taking full H advantage of its resources, the Union B Pacific has refused to continue, after B February 15, the recognizing of a H through ticket, originating in Rio Grande territory, the destination of II which Is a point on the Union Pacific system in Idaho. Denver passengers, going to Preston, Pres-ton, Idaho, cannot buy a through tic- Hj ket reading over the Rio Grande to Salt Lake and the Oregon Short Line H from Salt Lake to their destination, H but they can purchase transportation H from Denver to Ogden, and, of course, H pay the local rate from Ogden to Pres- H I ton over the Oregon Short Line. This H J restriction on the part of the Union H I Pacific aims to force travel over that H ' road. Having better facilities, the H , Union Pacific claims 'the right to pro- H thereby. H After February 15, this closing of H J the Ogden gateway will occur. To Hjj prevent the enforcing of the order, 1 tilt. PnmmprMal P.lnh nt S.ilt T.nlr? H j has commenced a bitter fight on the B Union Pacific, claiming Utah will be B injured, if the Ogden gateway is clos- B ; ed. Ogden objects to Salt Lake as- B ; suming to be all of Utah. Ogden B ! ould be benefited by the change. B and, like Salt Lake, is sufficiently B , selfish to demand that which is for B Ogden's betterment. I Salt Lake has been favored by the B j Union Pacific in the past to the great i injury of Ogden, but now that a H f broader policy has been followed, the B Salt Lakers are ready to turn upon B , their benefactor and antagonistically B proceed to the extent of urging our H senators and congressmen to bring B congressional pressure to bear on the H Union Pacific. Our delegation in con- H grcss cannot afford to become parti- H sans in this dispute, as our senators H and congressmen are supposed to re- H present the entire state and not Salt Hj Lake exclusively.
