Show PRIZE WINNERS IT THE OMTOU CONTEST The Dr E I Rich oratorical contest con-test between the Weber academy and Ogden high school was staged late this afternoon at the Tabernacle with Judge J. A. Howell as chairman. The contest was the third annual event of the kind and the two prizes put up by Dr Rich for the winners were $35 and $ 1 r in cash, respectively. Special assemblies were held nl both schools this morning to work the BtudentS up to a high degree of loyal spirit and the manifestation this aft ernoon at the Tabernacle, though kept within proper bounds, rivaled that of the two previous contests. The academy acad-emy students enjoyed a half holiday and were on the scene somewhat earlier earli-er than those from the high school, but the latter had their numbers augmented aug-mented by ninth grade students from the three junior high schools. The introductory talk was by Chair man Howell, who gave a brief reviev, of the past contests and their purpose, pur-pose, together with appropriate remarks re-marks concerning the one that was about to be staged. He also paid a compliment to I'r Rich The Misses Oertel, Cleone and Avon Ri b played a pleasing instrumental trio. v. huh was enthusiastically re--icived and the contest orations were given in the Following order 'The Beatitude of Imagination," Dorothy Taylor. Ogden high school "True Citizenship," Lorenzo Williamson, Willi-amson, Weber academy "Tbe Heritage of the Meek," Mabel Ma-bel Williams, Ogden high school "America's New Patriotism" LeRoy Leishman Weber academy. IDach of the talks was enthusiastically enthusiastic-ally applauded by the partisans of the E Jt"U B I I D The judges were Prof. Pedderson of Logan; I'rof Byron Cummings of the University of Utah, and Attorney Ste phen L Richards of Salt Lake City While they were compiling their nots several orchestral selections were given giv-en and loudly applauded The prize winners are First prize was awarded LeRoy Leishman of the Weber academy and Clifford Rassweiler received second prize. The prizes were awarded by Judge Howell and in making the awards, he commended eac h of the speakers, on behalf of the judges, as having made a worthy effort both In the composition composi-tion as well as the delivery of their orations. |
