Show tiu NEW LIGHTING RULES IN LONDON Seven Hundred Square Miles Affected by Strict Regulations Regula-tions No Bright Lights Anywhere. London, Oct 1. (Correspondence of tho Associated Press). London's icw lighting regulations went Into force today and a city of blinded windows, win-dows, screened skylights, shrouded street lamps and generally subdued and smothered appearance has taken on an even darker hue. In vain one looks for the blaze of light which used to flood Piccadilly, Circus and Lei cester Square, and, unless he Is an adept in finding his way around the city at night, ho Is likely to become lost In an obscurity as complete as that of the traditional London fog No Bright Lights. The stricter regulations Issued are now In effect over an area which comprises nearly 700 square miles, with a population of about 7,000,000 persons. According to the notice, bright lights in premises of all descriptions de-scriptions must be shaded or windows must be screened. No bright light may be cast "In any direction." In railway carriages "which arc provided with blinds" those blinds must be lowered except when the train Is at a istandstill In a station. The theatres have reduced their outside lighting to a minimum. Only a few small blue shaded lamps remain re-main to indicate where a theatre may be found. Shop keepers are particularly interested inter-ested in the new order. Yesterday shop keepers were able to enjoy full light until 7:30 p. m. Under the new order window lighting must 'be reduced re-duced at G o'clock. It is estimated that the street lighting in London has already been reduced to 20 per cent of the normal. |
