Show SDDE-THING MEN ARE CAUGHT BV THE POLICE Detectives Robert Burk and H. C. Ptttrson of the Ogden police department depart-ment made what is believed to be a very important capture yesterday, when they placed Clarence Reynold" and David Haley under arrest. Reynolds Rey-nolds and Haley are believed to be members of a gang of 'sure thine'' crooks, w hich was reported to be headed head-ed toward Ogden several days ago. The officers "spotted" the two Their watchfulness was rewarded yesterday when, according to their statements, they caught Reynold? and Haley in the act of attempting to defraud Kyle J. Worrell of $225 In currency. Worrell Is a 20-year-old youth of St. Anthony, and was on his way to Grand Rapids. Neb., to attetd school He is also In the custody cus-tody of the officers, though not Imprisoned, Im-prisoned, and is expected to act as a witness In the trial of Reynolds and Hale. which will be held as soon as complaints are filed. Owing to the activity of the police in saving his &225, he will he able to proceed oa his way as soon as the trial Is over. The story' connected with the capture cap-ture of Reynolds and Haley was that two men, one of them supposedly be lug Reynolds, met Worrell upon hi arrial in Opden yesterday and struck up an acquaintance. They led him off alonp Wall avenue, to a point near Twentieth street and. claiming to be Interested In his ambitions to receive an advanced education said they would let him in on the scheme 'o make a large sum of money without much effort. They explained that the business was risky and, while they were talking. Haiey came in piKht and was pointed out to Worrell as a detective, who was on the look out for gamblers. Worrell was then sworn to secrecv and then one of the strangers explained ex-plained that they had received some 8trj.ight "tips" on horse races and invited him to bet some money on a race In a poolroom known only to them. The man with Reynolds, to whom the officers gavc the cognomen of "Jockey Kid." appeared to be a sort of messenger and, after the betting plans were explained, Reynolds gave the "Jockey Kid" S10 and he left apparently ap-parently to go to the poolroom. He returned In a few mimVtes with $20, .saying that the "U" he had on the race was a sl-?-iight one. A short time later this bet was duplicated with the same result. After this preliminary pre-liminary work Worrell was Invited to join in the betting, being told that his $225 would bring him $500, If bet on a certain race. The youth gave up the money and at this juncture Detectives Burk and Peterson, who had been trailing the allefed crooks all morning, came upon up-on the scene, Burk following Worrell and Reynolds and Peterson watching Hale . When the money changed hands Officer Burk went up and placed Reynolds under arrest The alleged "sure thing" man struggled I wltn the officer and shouted George. " He also endeavored to place the money he had secured from Worrell in the youth's coat pocket, but In this he was frustrated by Burk. who saw the attempt. His efforts being be-ing a failure, he threw away the money and a card bearing the address to which Worrell expected to have his mall sent In Grand Island.
