Show FEWER POOR PEOPLE IN OGDEN THAN ELSEWHERE, SAYS SHERIFF T. A. DeVine Declares Very Small Number of Cases to be Cared For by the County Is Fine Indication of Prosperity Here Sees Great Future for City, i (By J. F. KENNY ) j In proportion to its iopulation, Ogden Og-den has fewer poor people to take care' of than any city In the country, according to Sheriff T. A. DeVine, who, in hla official capacity, comes rlnsely in contact with the Indigents of the county. A similar statement was made to me by M. Skeen, chairman chair-man of the board of county commissioners, commis-sioners, and it strikes me as a veiy Important proof of the genen.il prosperity pros-perity prevailing here A cltj which is able to provide employment for all who desire It certainly has a groat deal to its credit Sir DeVtne is a very active young man and radiates radi-ates confidence and optimism. "1 come in contact with a great many men from o'her cities during the course of a year," he told me. 'rmrl they all seem to regard Ogden las one of the most solid and substantial substan-tial cities in the west with perhaps the greatest future of any city in the jntt.-rmountain empire. Right non, oltWs all around us are feeling I the effects of the war and the money (shortage to such a degree that there are thousands of unemployed men; yet. In Weber county we have had practically no cases U be given aid from the public treasury because all of our people who are really earnestly earnest-ly peeking employment are certain to find work of some kind." Great Variety of Resources. Mr. DeVine declared he thought this condition was true of Ogden because the city is not dependent upon an single resouvce or industry but rather i upon a great diversity of interests, agricultural, horticultural, minlns. livestock transportation, manufacturing, manufactur-ing, wholesaling and jobbing and other oth-er things all or which eo-ntribute to i keep the community busy "Naturally," he continued, "when a I city depends largely on one resource suf h as mining for example, anything that affects the mining industry for i-.rwl nr ill off ar fa tln rilv ns i whole in just about the same proportion propor-tion But a community that is ble3 sed with such a variety of resources as Ogden possesses, even though conditions con-ditions may make business bad In one particular line for a short time goes right ahead without noticeable depreciation generally because the other lines inaiie up for the one tlr.it Is weak. "Real Gateway of West." 'It is quite natural, in my opinion, that Ogden should have seen sueb splendid development dnring the last year or two along industrial and jobbing job-bing lines The city is the real gateway gate-way to the west and especially to a large region which produces much in wealth through mineral, timber and other resources, but little in foodstuffs food-stuffs and other necessities and comforts. com-forts. This vast area must be clothed cloth-ed and fed and it is logical that the duty should fall to the lot of producers pro-ducers and manufacturers and jobbers who make this market their head-nun head-nun rters. There is speedy transportation transpor-tation to almost every point in all directions; electric power Is plentiful and cheap, and the city has man., other advantages in this respect. "Then, loo, there are miles of good wagon roads in addition to the railroad rail-road facilities which have had so much to do with Ogden's upbuilding, while the constantly increasing and expanding interurban electric lines are playing an important pari in the development of this community and the country surrounding it. "Ogden must always be the central trading point for a wide radius of wonderfully productive farming land. Our people are learning more and more how to farm more intensively and a ride through the agriculture I regions surrounding Ogden, at the height of the harvest season, will show any persun the firmness and Banks Fine Indicction. "A visitor to Ogden this summer said: 'Of course you have a great city here and one that should appeal to every investor. Your bank statements state-ments show that Ogden is" a safe and sane, dependable city for any Investor.' Invest-or.' Ogden's seven bauking institutions institu-tions with their splendid showing of solidity and strength certainly Inspire c ont idencc "Considering- it from every standpoint, stand-point, there are many excellent reasons rea-sons for the growth of Ogden in the past few years and still better reasons rea-sons for even greater upbuilding In the future." Tin Bberlff told me he had noticed several business men had remarked the w idespread tendency toward bom building among the dwellers in this community "That strikes me," he said, "as one of the finest Indications mf Ogden s permanency and strength as a city. Our young peopl- ail seem Inclined to obtain property ami build homes Just as quickly as possl bio and this certainly is a healthy and admirable trait. Many New Homes Here "A few years ago, half of the desirable de-sirable lots on the Bench were vacant va-cant and now they arc occupied with attractive homes; many of them modest, mod-est, but a number that are quite pretentious pre-tentious The city s residence limits lim-its have been spreading in all dire tions during the last few years, just as fast as the busiuess section has I been developing. The new districts set apait lor home building east and north of the city have aJl been filled up rapidly with attractive homes and now, at the south end of Washington avenue, where th.- new Country club will be located, a district is lo be added to the residence section and brought strictly up to date with modern mod-ern Improvements and there is every reason to believe that this part of town will bo eagerly Invaded by the growing army of home builders' Among the official duties of the sheriff are those connected with niorl-. niorl-. ! . foreclosures and similar mal "The number of theso in proportion to the population," he asserted, "is almt.Hi negligible Apparently wry few of the largo numbers ol home recently built in this city and mn. in couree of construction are encum- T. Viewing the situation trom all angles 1 don't see how any man in Search of a good locality for investments could do better than cast his lot in Ogden." |
