Show uu RAILROADS READY TO MOVE TROOPS TO TRE BORDER Salt Lake. April 24 Telegrams were received last night by D. E Bur-ley Bur-ley and D. S Spencer of the Oregon Short Line passenger department, asking ask-ing for information in regard to running run-ning lime for the moving of the Twenty-first infantry from Vancouver barracks, bar-racks, across the Columbia river from Portland, to Galveston, Texas Three social trains will be necessary to carry the troops to the point of embarkation em-barkation and the railroad has been requested to furnish the information at once. The troops in the event of a call for their services will move from Port land over the Oregon-Washington Railroad & Navigation company to Huntington over the Oregon Short Line from Huntington to Green River, Riv-er, Wyo ,, and over the Union Pacific into Denver. From Denver they wlP go south over the Colorado &. Southern South-ern and then over the Fort Worth &. Denver City and Into Galveston over the Trinity & Brazos valley. There will be two passenger trains of thirteen sleepers each aud a freight train of thirty-one flat and box cars In addition to kitchen and baggage cars. The time for departure from Vancouver barracks has not been set, but It is expected that the regiment will entrain as soon as te equipment can be sent into Portland from other points in the Pacific northwest, where the Union Pacific system has equip ment stored in anticipation of th ordering or-dering out of the regiments In that part of the country. The Denver & Rio Grande has caused caus-ed twenty-two tourist sleepers, four standard sleepers and a number of baggage and box cars to be assembled assem-bled in the Salt Lake yards to carry Utah National guardsmen to the bor der In caBe the war department Issues orderB for them to go. The orders to assemble the equipment in Salt Lake was received by I. A. Benton, general agent of the passenger department, depart-ment, from the passenger traffic offices offi-ces of the Gould lines in St. Louis The Missouri Pacific, the Western Pacific and the Rio Grande in con Junction with the Pullman company rushed the equipment to Salt Lake. Whether it is only a precautionary measure on the part of the railroad company or whether the cars were sent here on orders from Washington Washing-ton Denver & Rio Grande officials would not state The Rio Grande has announced that in the event the government decides to send the Utah troops to the from by any other line, the equipment would be turned over to that line immediately upon receipt of orders. In addition lo the equipment which Is now in the Salt Lake yards, of the Rio Grande, several steel flat cars for the use of the Utah battery are coming com-ing from Denver They will arrive in Salt Lake today The Union Pacific system is also distributing tourist sleeping cars throughout the Pacific northwest states. Tourist cars which have been OH eastbound trains have been cut out at La Grande and Huntington, Ore . N'ampa and Pocatello, Ida. and a large number of cars have been sent to the Oregon-Washington Railroad & Navigation company at Portland and Seattle. The Oregon Short Line Ol flclals declare that the cars are being be-ing distributed In anticipation of the mobilization of the national guard- ol Montana. Idaho. Washington and Ore gon Nothing has been received by the railroad company from Washington Washing-ton In regard to the assembling equipment, but the railroad is prepared pre-pared for any movement of troops which may be ordered. The Salt Lake Route I? making arrangements ar-rangements to have a large number of tourist cars and standard sleepers rushed info Salt Lake on twenty-four hours notice. A part of the cars will be assembled in the Salt Lake yards, but the greater number will be parked In the Los Angeles yards, where the Santa F- the Southern Pacific and the Salt Iake Route will all be supplied sup-plied with Pullman equipment. |
