Show RIOT OVER U. S. FLAG Winnipeg, Manitoba, July 4 The waving of the flag of the United States here early today, while thousands of provincial soldiers were parading the streets, precipitated a riot during which the flag was trampled and torn and a number received minor injuries. The incident occurred as thousands of soldiers from Winnipeg and Manitoba Mani-toba were marching through the citv on their return from annual camp at Sewell. near Brandon, where there had been maneuvers under Ian Hamilton, famous British South African war general When the 100th regiment was before be-fore a local bank, an American ap peaied on the curbing waving an American flag and shouting "Hurrah for the American eagle " J B. Mitchell, colonel in command of the regiment, ordered one of his men to request the American to put away the flag, but before the soldier could do so, a number of angry civilians civili-ans pounced upon the American, tore the flag from him and threw it Into the street. Before It could be rescued the flag was torn and dirtied. In the free-for-all fight which fol lowed, a number of civilians were Injured, In-jured, but none seriously Th Amen can, whose name could not be ascertained, ascer-tained, escaped without serious harm and with the aid of the police eluded the crowd Soldiers of the regiment presened perfect order and took no part in the demonstration. no |
