The author of the bill now before ur state legislature, providing for a I tax on every' qualified elector In tils state, male and female, of S3 per car with exemption to all who vote at the general, municipal or school elections held, or to those who b reason of illness, infirmities or absence are unable to vote, explains , that his bill is not to raise revenue and il is not expected that very many will be compelled to pay this tax. It la the purpose to obtain the expression expres-sion of the majority of the people at the polls This measure should be a companion com-panion hill to that prohibiting the hauling of voters to the polls. The Standard Is In favor of all these- election reforms Utah's elections elec-tions have been a disgrace to the tate in that the results of the elections elec-tions have depended more on the activity ac-tivity of the party machines in getting get-ting voters to the polls and therefore there-fore on the amount of the slush funds I available than on the judgment of the people as a whole. The eligible voters should be urged I to record their preferences at every election and this bill olfers a sufficient suffi-cient incentive, in our opinion, to accomplish that purpose |
