Show ARE considering CONSI DIRING tariff SENATE IS acquainting ITSELF WITH conditions eastern manufacturers and western producers make suggestions as to changes washington aug 31 alie work which has been begun by senator burrows subcommittee committee sub on the administrative features of the proposed tariff revision will be followed by similar labors by another committee subcommittee sub of the senate committee on finance of which senator hopkins of illinois Is chairman mr hopkins committee Is composed of himself and senators burrows penrose money 2 and Tal latero lafera to this committee has been entrusted the great burden of the labor of preparing a bill for the senate as it is directed to consider what changes in tho the customs rates are desirable and to secure secure proof of the relative cost of production in the united states and other competing countries while in washington recently attending the meeting of the burrows committee senator hopkins stated that he would would not call his organization together until some time during the fall in the meantime however he will ask the departments of state agriculture and commerce and labor to procure such information aaion for him as they can through their representatives abroad relative to the cost of production in foreign countries with a view to supplying the committee the best information possible in conducting its comparisons when the committee meets it will viii immediately take up the subject of probable changes not only upon labor but upon the various industries of the country countr and will undertake to decide insofar as it can what changes in the tariff are desirable from all points of view that mr hopkins appreciates the magnitude of this inquiry Is made mani manifest feit by the preparation that he is making ile he also apprehends ends no little difficulty in reconciling the conflicting interests which are always involved in tariff changes already the eastern manufacturers are making known their demands tor for free raw material while the western producers are beginning to stand eland out stiffly for the protection of such articles as wool hides and ores the senate finance committee has no purpose of trying to rob the house committee on ways wava and means of its prerogative of originating tariff legislation but is amply preparing itself for the intelligent consideration of tho subject as the house bills reach the senate it is understood that members of the house committee are making preparation for the proposed legislation though nono none of them havo have come to washington for that purpose it Is believed that by taking up the work at this early date much time can be saved and that the special session i which is to bo be called after the fourth of march the tariff legislation will be materially shortened senator hopkins expressed the opinion that a long session for that purpose will not bo be necessary |
