Show a U R E A I 1 TO A PEN n arrangements COMPLETED BY THE POWERS THAT BE officials of school for the deaf and blind anticipate greater accod than ever before As the chilly weather makes its appearance the student is strongly impressed with the idea that the school work la Is near at hand and preparation for the same is largely in vogue throughout tho the entire country not only are the students getti getting fig rady for the siege but the school boards superintendents pr principals IncI pals and included are r making aking 11 ready for school days the public free schools of the city open their doors on the ol of september the weber stake academy deglas operation on the same day an aej the state school for the deaf and blind will open a few days earlier september ath the prospects are that all the schools will bo be more largely attena attended od this year than they were last year and the instructions to be giyen given will be more efficient than eier eer before consequently greater results will follow the school for the deaf and blind is a state institution of more than passing interest it not only furnishes instruction to the unfortunate 1111 pupils pils that come within its tuition but it also provides tor for too the support and maintenance of the students students sti dents while ahey are in the school ri he school has quite an extensive farm upon which an abundance of foodstuffs Js is raised each year A great deal of the prod tic x of the farm is consumed at the school during the school year but some of the fruits of course have to he be marketed because the entire crop is not needed in the school this years crop has been quite abundant and its harvest time is just now approaching the fruit crop which includes the choicest of peaches apples pears and plums is estimated to be worth this year aide from the large quantity ii aed sed for canning for the use of the school Pre president Eident driggs states that about civo thousand quarts of fruit will be canned this year for the use of the school luring during lurl ng the tha school season in this supply there will be about 2500 quarts of apple sauco sauce and a hundred undred i quarts of tomatoes the balance of the five thousand quarts to consist of the oher fruits it was formerly the custom tn n at the school to sun dry the ap of the farm and cook them as they were needed at the table during the winter but experience has taught to tho 0 managers of the commissary department part ment that it is better and cheaper to make the fruit into apple sauce and place it in cans the same as is done with other kinds of fresh fruits A good crop of vegetables is also raised each year but some of the product has to be purchased from the grocery men and farmers A goodly rai r amber riber of hogs are raised each year but this does not furnish the meat supply for the school A considerable quantity of meats other than pork liar has to be purchased from the mar lot het the gathering of some of the fruits ort 0 the farm will begin today ond and will be continued continue i as fast as the crop is ready for gathering mr dilges tates states that the school is ready to receive the students and that tho the indications are that the full number ot of pupils registered last as year will bo be in attendance at the opening of the school next week the same efficient corps of teachers that was in charge of the school last year will be at their posts of duty this year end it is confidently expected by president driggs that even better results will obtain |
