Show U S district attorney desires banker to sail at once new york feb C at the request of united states district attorney albert S boardman counsel for charles W morse late today cabled his client at liverpool asking that morse return to this city mr boardman believes that the banker will take passage on the first steamer sailing west after the arrival at queenstown Queens town or liverpool of the cunard line steamship campania upon which his attorneys say morse sailed from here last saturday alie campania is due at queens j town friday and at liverpool early saturday allowing for heavy weather which is delaying all atlantic traffic the campania can hardly fall to reach one of the two ports in time to allow morse to sail on the etruria which will be the earliest steamer he can get the etruria Is scheduled to leave liverpool at saturday afternoon and sail from queenstown Queens town between 9 and 11 sunday forenoon she Is due here late the following saturday it is hardly possible that she will arrive in time to dock before sunday though she Is a good weather b oat and Is usually less delayed by storms than the newer vessels of the fleet the attorneys cable it is expected will be resent re sent by wireless to the campania when the vessel is reported off bromhead Brow head ireland 70 miles west of queenstown Queens town the steamer had not been reported tonight but her agents expected to hear from her before morning the the white star liner baltic will sail from queenstown Queens town tomorrow but it Is hardly possible that morse could connect with her attorney Board mans action in cabling his client followed an hours conference with mr stimson who was in charge of the investigation before the federal grand jury of the recent conduct of certain national banks mr boardman had been subpoenaed to appear before the grand jury today supposedly he said to tell what he knew of morses connection with certain banking institutions the jury however did not reach mr board mans testimony and sent word for him to return tomorrow in the meantime mr boardman had been closeted with the federal district attorney aa he left the federal building mr boardman was asked whether ho had said that he could produce morse should eliat gentleman be wanted no he replied but at the request of united states district attorney I 1 have cabled mr at liverpool to come back and I 1 have reason to believe that he will return at once ho Is now on atio campania asked why mr had requested him to to ask mr marso to return mr baardman said 1 I do not know but I 1 suppose it Is because a good many people here want him I 1 mr stimson would say nothing as to why he desired the presence here 0 the man who after he had organized the american ice company and the consolidated steamship company and was reported to be worth became disastrously involved in the misfortunes of the banks which he had been able to control it is the policy of my to divulge nothing concerning criminal ce edings which may affect different persons and institutions said mr stimson concerning the summoning before the federal grand jury of mr boardman and former justice morgan J orion abo latter also a member of the law firm of obrion boardman piatt the federal officer said 1 I have nothing whatever to say and the public is at liberty to draw any conclusions it may see lit concerning the appearance of lawyers boardman and obrien before eral grand jury I 1 cannot discuss tho matter neither will I 1 admit or deny any of the rumors current the rumors referred to by mr stimson wore to the effect that the present federal grand jury was likely to return indictments in the banking cases soon several weeks ago mr admitted that the federal grand juryj since early in december been investigating vesti gating the banking situation but i as to the likelihood of indictments he then declined to talk though the cunard were quite confident that morse had not sailed on the campania as his actor ney believes it was pointed out by friends today that tho effect upon the health of morse of seeing his once great fortune melt away was such as to make it probable that he bad secured passage through others in order to avoid the interruptions to his needed rest certain to follow should his presence on shipboard be generally known tho same intimate social associates ridiculed the idea tant the backers bap kers trip abroad could be reasonably construed as showing an inclination to escape responsibilities at homo nothing could be more ludicrous they say than the idea of a man fleeing to england when the treaty between the united states and great britain was so broad tant the extradition of any one indicted for any offense specified in the federal statutes in connection with the conduct of national banks could be readily secured in fact they insisted an asylum from extradition could be found only in one or two of the very small south american and central american republics or in somo african state that morse absolutely required tho seclusion and possibilities for pora alon physically afforded by in ocean voyage was generally admitted anong those who hove known
