Show RECAS of WEEK centennial celebration cona mentions vent ions taffs visit to panama i coming events which promise to be features of the weeks news include eight state conventions the centennial celebration of the roman catholic diocese of new york the visit of secretary taft to the canal zone for tho adjustment of diplomatic matters a national convention ot the unemployed at new york city the movement of the battleship fleet up the coast of california and th 0 return to his flagship of rear admiral evans and further debate upon the supply bills in congress secretary taft will leave on his southern trip thursday aej will be gone for three weeks he will sail on the cruiser prairie and will be accompanied compa nied by a detachment of marines it is believed that a number of questions pending between the united stated and panama and others concerning the relations of panama and colombia will be settled during the secretary stay on the isthmus the state conventions will be for the election of delegates to the national conventions republican conventions vent ions will be held in colorado pennsylvania vermont west clr ginia maine and maryland democratic convention will be held in new jersey connecticut and texas the democratic slate convention in connecticut will he held tuesday and wednesday in new haven it is an open question whether the delegates shall be instructed whom to favor for the presidential nomination most of the bryan strength will bo in the city delegations and will rally around the new haven county delegates under the leadership of alexander troup who is one of mr bryans most intimate friends in the east r troup was not chosen as a delegate by the new haven town convention but he is expected to sit in the convention on a proxy credential and with former governor thomas A waller ot new london will be one of the commanding figures on the floor the belief is held that the bryan men will make no fight for resolutions of instruction st to the delegation preferring to have a harmonious gathering and SQ secure several places on the delegation for personal friends of mr bryan in congress the agricultural appropriation pria tion bill will follow the naval bill in order in the senate and it will be succeeded in turn by th e district of Colu mola aal pension bils the house will give the entire week to the consideration of the civil sundry bill which is really the last of the bag supply bills to receive the attention of that body during the session there are two more of these bills to come the general deficiency and the military academy bills but they will carry comparatively small appropriations the bouse currency caucus is scheduled tor some night about the middle of the week mr watson the republican whip says there is no doubt the caucus will be held and he insists that a currency bill will be agreed upon at the caucus and passed by the house the prediction is general v among republican members that it any bill passes it will be the vreeland bill if that or any other currency measure receives the approval of the caucus it will probably be taken up for consideration by the house immediately after the disposal of he sundry civil bill there will be two days of general debate on the sundry civil bill which in addition to permitting several political speeches to bo made will also afford opportunity to consider confer boce reports of which quite a number are expected to be presented during the week the bill itself will probably provoke no little antagonism the naval appropriation bill will probably occupy most of the senates time monday and there are several speeches to be made on the four battleship amendment the senate will meet at II 11 monday for the purpose of proceeding with consideration of the bill and it Is the agreed program to conclude with it before adjournment journ ment for the day before leaving for the canal zone secretary taft will deliver three speeches he will speak at bridgeport conn on monday tuesday afternoon he will address a meeting of the red cross society at the astorca in new york and the same evening he will before the civic forum in that city the topic the influence of america upon popular government throughout the world governor hughus will address anti race track gambling mass meetings on thursday night at schenectady tady and on friday at ithaca the battleship fleet will sail from santa barbara on tuesday calling at port harford aej anchoring at monterey on may 1 at the latter port rear admiral bivans whose indisposition has necessitated a brief rest ashare will again hoist his flag upon the connecticut and once more assume active command of the fleet saturday the battleship fleet will sail for santa cruz where they will make a brief stop proceeding for san francisco on may 5 the gacond annual banquet on monday of tho independence leagues Is expected to give added impetus to the movement for a national independence party |
