POISON IN GASOLINE Physicians are aro calling attention to the increasing number of cases of poIsoning duo due to drinking or swallowing of considerable amounts of gasoline or or coal oil Gasoline consists ot of the lower boiling hydrocarbons When the vapors are arc inhaled symptoms of headaches nausea giddiness short short- ness flees of breath blueness and even unconsciousness appear Drowsiness is reported as a prominent symptoms in gasoline poisoning In case large amounts of gasoline are swallowed unconsciousness comes on in ten to fIt fIt- fifteen teen minutes The symptoms are especially se- se severo vero in children One case is reo re- reported ported in which a girl 20 years old died in five 11 hours after drink drink- drinking drinking ing an ounce of gasoline although some 1 people eople have havo survived after taking larger quantities When coal oIl is swallowed the effects are similar to those of nl al- alcohol cohol but there is much irritation of the bowels There are few tew deaths reported as the result of drinking kerosene since It is not so 50 poison polson poisonous ous as benzine or gasoline Of course the first thing to do dowhen dowhen when a poison polson Is swallowed is to get as much as possible of it back out of the stomach Vomiting may maybe maybe be brought about by any of the common methods such as 1 putting a finger down the throat taking lots ot of salt waterS water or by having a physician inject drugo that ably produce vomiting If the 1 patient allent has collapsed he should be put at rest and kept quIet He should be kept warm by bythe bythe the application of hot water bottles or electric heating pads Coffee may mar be given as a stimulant A physician may produce stimulation by the tue injection of more 1 powerful drugs and treat the various symptoms toms tome as they develop
