Show electrical WORKERS peremptory refusal of W ha H bancroft to meet union officials ominous following the role rule laid down to tho the street car men president bancroft of the utah light railway company has refused to treat with the international brotherhood of electrical workers thirty five of whom in tho the employ of the company have asked for an increase in wages and the signing of a working agreement agre agro ament in a it letter to louis lyun secretary and business busine sg agent of the union thursday president bancroft say that inasmuch as sir mr lynn Is not in the employ of the company he has no business to transact acting on this reply the electrical workers union met last night strong and unanimously agreed to stand by the agreement as it was presented to the company tho the 11 union nion also voted to place the whole matter in the hands of mr lynn lann who isalio Is also president of the district council and he will act in irk conjunction with the executive committee of the union last night after the meeting mr lynn sent a lengthy telegram to M J sullivan grand vice president at san francisco stating tho the conditions here and asking tor for instructions the company has ha refused through superintendent scott of the light department part ment to grant grank more of an increase than 7 12 cents i a day tor for linemen and as this does not satisfy the demands of the lamp trimmers meter men switchboard and station men in the light department the whole mat ter was put ip ap to president bancroft secretary lynn points to the fact that the work of the electrical men ba has been made more moro bazar hazardous dous in the last year by reason of the fact that the voltage on the light wires has been dou doubled blod the current used to bo be ot of 2200 volts but Is now of volts the worle work is more dangerous for that reason ren he eald said last night the working conditions of the men are more hazardous and they do enough skilled work to be paid pahl more they are paid more elsewhere the constitution governing such cases aa as that now before the union and the company will be carried out to the letter we will do all in our power however to bring about an amicable settlement of the differences the letter from louis lynn to president bancroft Is as follows dated april 24 you are doubtless aware that the electrical workers members of local union 67 of salt lake and of local union of ot ogden who are employed by your company presented a request for an increase in wages and a regulation of hours of labor to your general manager sir air wells nearly two months ago ho ito stated to our committee khat that on account of not being familiar with our particular class of work he would refer us to superintendent scott of the electrical department and would act upon any suggestion that he might make the culmination of our efforts with mr scott resulted yesterday in a flat refusal upon his part to in ju any way r satisfy our request before the committee left him they asked if he was authorized by tho the higher authorities of your company to deliver that answer as their final ultima ultimatum turn he answered us that that was the case vo now appeal to you as tho the highest authority representing tho the com coni banys interests to know it if it Is your desire that further efforts to negotiate an amicable understanding ahall shall be terminated mr scott has left us no other alternative we therefore will withhold further action until 7 their thursday aay evening awaiting your reply president Ban crofts reply dated april 25 follows 1 I acknowledge tha the receipt of a communication from you dated april 24 1 I am advised that you are not in the employ of the utah light and railway compana compa nv or any other company with which I 1 am connected we have therefore no business bual nesB to transact with you so far as I 1 know the text of the agreement follows it is hereby agreed between the utah light and railway company party of the faret part and local no 57 and ogden local no 1 I B E W party of the second part ditnes seth that the following wage scale ahall shall be in effect throughout the district covered by the utah light and rail way company minimum scale sub foremen linemen 9 i trouble men a month eight hours from shop to shop to constitute a days work trimmers 90 a month lamp repairers a month eight houra from shop to agop to constitute a days work switchboard men loo a month switchboard helpers 76 a month meter heter setters a month eight hours from shop to shop to constitute a days work worl all overtime shall be paid at the rate of time and a half time almo until 12 p m and double time from 12 p in until 8 a m double time ume for all legal holidays holiday an and sundays |
