| Show CAPTURED BY CITIZENS burglar run down after lively chase and held for the police salt lake aug 19 thomas smith an alleged housebreaker was captured at about 9 last evening after an exciting chase for half a block by david H nelson a street car conductor and H L galles he is in jail charged with burglary sir nelson who lives at the corner of third west and fourth north streets got oft to take some fruit to the house As he entered the front door he saw a man run out through the back door he immediately gave chase the man ran down third west and fourth north streets got off to take some fruit to the house As he entered the front door he saw a man run out through the back door he immediately gave chase the man ran down third west the thief was about twenty feet ahead of nelson when he saw giles his brother in law he cried to him to stop the man smith heard the shout and ran into an alley but giles cornered him and soon nelson arrived the two held smith and the police were summoned the patrol wagon made a flying trip to the scene and policemen golding and howells took smith to the station smith did not have a gun se said he was in the house only to get something to eat when the house was searched it was found that it had been partially ransacked N smith was arrested on july 13 by policeman golding on a charge of trying to steal a stolen bicycle he was discharged as it could not be proven that he had stolen the wheel he then gave his name as roy ausler mrs M mathason whose home was robbed a few nights ago identifies smith as the man whom she saw coming from the house when she returned home mrs matheson lives at west third north she had left the house about halt an hour before and when she returned she saw a man run from the back of the place an in esti gatlon was made and she found that a comans womans gold watch a silver watch three rings a bracelet an odd fellows charm and 35 cents in cash had been stolen the house had been thoroughly ransacked |
