Show brande FRANCHISE IS PASSED BY COUNCIL subject to mayors approval leave Is given railroad to build tracks across twenty first twenty second and twenty third amendment says tracks must not inter fere with proposed viaduct it a special meeting ot the alty council held last evening the franchise a feed for by the rio grande western for the right to build tracks across twenty first twenty second and tn enty third streets wag reported from the joint committee on law and streets to which it was referred after its farst reading with the recommendation men dation that with certain amendments which the committee submitted lie franchise be granted the franchise aa amended by the committee was then read and upon mo ilon of nye the report of the committee was adopted the franchise then came before tha council on the second reading of ordinances was read and on motion v ot chambers the franchise passed its second reading the franchise was then passed to its third and final reading and on motion of nye it passed its final reading and j wag referred to the mayor for hi approval on the final passage of the ordinance all members present voted me the en present at the meet ng were carr chambers rand all nye davedson Dav ldson paine emmett and boyea previous to the meeting there vas a meeting of the joint committee with A B welby of the salt lake division 0 the rio grando B M allison attorney for the road and 0 B gilson local agent and he general situation gone over the railroad men expressing their views and explaining to tha counci haes just what they wanted after the meeting city attorney bagley drew up the amendment which the bolot committee proposed ilo incorporate into the franchise the franchise gives to the railroad company the right to maintain three tracks of standard gang across the streets mentioned for a period of fifty 5 cars and that between the tracks and for a distance of two feet on the outside of the three tracks the street must be paved to conform to the paving on the remainder at the street tho amendment to the franchise provides that the tracks laid under the franchise shall not in any way interfere with the erection or maintenance 0 o a viaduct to be built on twenty fourth street the construction of alch Is in contemplation and the easterly end ot which is to be con d on twenty fourth street between wall and lincoln avenues and extend to weber river over all of the tracks between wall avenue and weber river it was an open secret in the council chamber that the amendment was made at the suggestion of the harriman people aho vho have showed no feigns of being opposed io the granting of the the amendment also provides for the size and general plan of the proposed viaduct after the adjournment of the council it was evident that the railroad men present we re greatly pleased at the passage 0 the franchise especially mr welby as it was thought that there might be some opposition to the passage of the franchise by the residents of the locality in which the new ards aro to be located inifi it was evl as one of the railroad men said bat the people realize what the building of a large freight terminal means here As soon as the details can be arranged the plans tor the building of the new freight depot will be gotten out and the work begun |
