womack charged with murder in the first degree for the killing of joseph S mathews on the night of october 22 was begun in judge C B diehls court this morning last evening the state concluded its preliminary case and now the defense is on colonel kaighn representing the accused recalled mrs mathews for further examination his first question was you testified that your husband was of a cross purpose of supplying power to cities and industrial concerns in salt lake and summit counties has been told already in the herald local men are largely interested in the company which has secured various power rights franchises etc in the state the purpose of the bond issue is to defray the cost of construction and equipment and to put the company in operation the trust deed filed yesterday the trust company FUEL SITUATION SERIOUS nor 16 the fuel situation for part of the state is becoming very alarming not enough coal has been received during the last two weeks to keep the institutions that are depending on a coal supply going and some already hive h ive been compelled to shut down or substitute wood the electric light plant at alch field has barely managed to pull along by economizing and reducing its service to half night runs but it may at any time shut down altogether manager bronn of the company is endeavoring to get a supply ot wood on handa until the coal supply telephone message from salt lake today brought the sad news that wil tord knudsen of the sixth ward who was on a mission in norway had died and that hie remains would be shipped from liverpool for provo today mr knudsen was the son of sir and mrs knuden of this city and was iban here jan 7 1883 he left tor scandinavia as a missionary in april 1903 and was assigned to norway he soon after began to suffer from hip disease and several months ago was taken to the hospital in copenhagen tor treatment as believed here that he died at ahe hospital although na details are known mr knudsen was an intelligent exemplary man and great sympathy Is felt for his family and relatives W M perill came here from weiser ida at the of the unetah land drawing and was here till the of october when he left the commercial lodging house where he had been staying without giving any information of where he was going and leaving papers and other effects in his room it has been learned thai he bought a ticket represented himself as a buyer of real estate he had letters of introduction from chicago financial concerns and on ahe strength of these cashed a draft for on the bank receiving cash and a draft on a
