Show SAMUEL WHITTAKER EXPLORES UNKNOWN TERRITORY finds evidences of prehistoric geysers in land previously by civilized man prom wednesdays standard samuel whitaker has returned from an exploring trip in the southwestern part of the state this part of tho state has never before been visited by white men and mr whitaker and party have the distinction of being original explorers to western bred people it is not an uncommon condition to seo civilization side by side with lands that have held their stillness and secrets so closely that the ancient men of the stone age were the last to make the cliffs echo with their war cries and the yellow malzo and pumpkins to flourish in time of peace that utah at once time had gigantic geysers that spouted hot mineralized water hundreds of feet in the air wag established beyond a doubt by the exploring party slim columns of hard shiny rock formed as the violence and force of the geyser decreased stand out from three to four thousand feet in height as evidence of their existence the geysers are still now and the rock weather beaten in some of the hollow rock basins quiet pools of murky water reflect the sky above small springs bubbling over with hot water charged with a variety of minerals honeycomb tho land for miles and exist as a contrast to what has been caves small and larger deep and shallow wet and dry box canyons with inaccessible sides mesas with round smooth surfaces gorges that twist and wind in and out like a huge serpent the hot blinding sun beating down mercilessly the absence of trees and green vegetation were encountered and wondered at by the party some of the caves are mammoth in size one the entire pack of twenty animals were sheltered in over night and room tor thrice that number was left this cave measured feet in depth it evidently waa a favorite retreat tor the stone age men as hatchets arrowheads arrow heads arrows flints beads and pottery littered the floor while holding their secrets from the inquisitive white man hieroglyphics were painted and hewn into the solid rock walls in the southeastern part of the state the most wonderful natural bridges were encountered the largest the augusta Is feet long from the arch to the river bed a space of feet and from the curve of the arch to the platform Is solid rock tor 65 feet the buttresses of this bridge are well formed alff its preservation will be far into the future the most remarkable bridge of all is the edwin for a straight feet huge chatt of rock spans the river from band to bank the bed below is feet away the thickness of tho bridga 10 feet and width 20 it Is as how the rock sustains itself but it does and has done so for years these are a few of the wonderful geological formations seen by the party the country h rich in antiquity and Is worthy of preservation by the government one more example of lost civilization rich jars and pots of pottery were found one jar had engraved on its side a perfect egyptian lotus blossom from whence came it mr whitaker will make another trip as soon as he tabulates the results of the abet trip this time he will go prepared to bring back specimens of the work and art of the lost people who dwelt in cliffs and worshiped a sun god |
