| Show WAS TO DIE sensational TESTIMONY IS GIVEN AT FRANKFORT frankfort ky may aw H culton the clerk of auditor of state sweeney who is under indictment as accessory to the murder ot goebel front on the witness stand in his own behalf in the hearing ot the motion for bail in his case this afternoon and gave highly sensational testimony custons Cul tons testimony followed after the motions tor ball in the cases ot powers dails youtsey whittaker and combs had been overruled the substance of custons Cul tons testimony was as follows 1 I had talks with powers and taylor about bringing men to frankfort taylor wanted about twenty five witnesses from jackson county before the canvassing board I 1 had another talk with powers cecil davidson howard and others I 1 did not tell the men who came with me that democratic legisla tors were to be killed by raising a row in the senate and I 1 never beard it discussed when barrys berrys contest was to be voted on I 1 heard it discussed that he was to retain his seat even if voted out I 1 heard nothing said about a plan to kill anybody culton said W R johnson wanted his custons Cul tons pistol henry youtsey told me that goebel would be killed I 1 told him that it must not be done I 1 told governor bradley what youtsey said and bradley eald my god this must not be done youtsey afterwards said there was nothing in it witness said that on the day alter the assassination be was with jim howard in the state house yard howard called hla attention to a piece of paper posted in a window well what of that I 1 asked oh you have sense enough to understand der stand have you not was howards reply he said howard took out of his pocket some 45 pistol cart ridges howard sold dont ask me any more fool questions henry youtsey after the assassination asked the witness where he was on the day of the murder 1 I told him 1 was up in the lobby of the house youtsey asked me how it would do tor mm to say that he was there with me I 1 told youtsey that I 1 was afraid toe was going to get into trouble also that grant roberts wanted to see him roberta had missed his rifle and told me he believed youtsey had it I 1 told him toe had better see roberts the witness told ot another conversation with youtsey who came with burton ot county youtsey said he had the greatest scheme yet that goebel could be shot from the secretary of states office and nobody would ever know who did it witness denied that he had a conversation with miss sallie jackson in which be made statements damaging to himself at a meeting in powers office I 1 presided and the question of providing boarding places tor contest witnesses was discussed B B burton pulled a handful of cartridges and said A few of these turned loose in the proper place would soon bettle the contest caleb powers said that it any such talk as that was to be indulged in h would leave the meeting culton testifies again tomorrow |
