Show H ' j RECLAIMING THE LANDS. H A company with 5.000 acres of land on the alkali flats west of j Salt Lake City has filed a mortgage with the Utah Savings & Trust H Company as security for a bond issue of $150,000. The land is at a H point about half way between Salt Lake and Saltair, on the line of j the Saltair railroad. Had the 5,000 acres been offered as a gift to the H , average man, he would have refused it as of no value. The ground H is crusted with alkali and salt and is the most uninviting stretch of H land that we have seen in the Salt Lake valley, and yet the owners j olaim it is the best truck gardening acreage in the state, and they H may he right. H i The government has proved that alkali soils, where drainage can H be successfully pursued, "are redeemable and, once freed from their H , excess of alkali, become highly valuable. H If the lands in the bottoms west of Salt Lake are being reclaimed, H ! there should be no waste land in Weber county. H i There are small districts in the recognized agricultural area of H this county which have been lost to cultivation by alkali, and to the 1 west of Ogden, near the lake, are sections which never have been con- M sideredV worth anything. This land can he brought under cultivation H and made to add to the wealth of Weber county, if the 5,000 acres H bonded in Salt Lake at the rate of $30 an acre is worthy 30 cents. |
