Show MASSACRE AFMlNmic f a !b s i j g bj u j Refugees From Hankow Tell of a Fearful Slaughter Shnnghal, Oct, 19. Six packed steamers arrived hero from Nankow today, carrying refugees. The steamer steam-er Belgravia was occupied exclusively by foreign passengers, who wore given giv-en free accommodations at tho dl rectlon of the consuls at Hankow. Tho ship was so crowded that many of tho passengoru slept on tho floors ! of the hold. Moat ot tho foreigners ! were Russians omployod In tho tea factories and Belgian Iron workers employed lu the steel works, the Han Yang arsenal and on tho Poklng-Han-kow railway. Tho refugees declare that tho whole Yangtse valley, from Hankow lo Shanghai, Is in the hands of the rebels, with the possible excontion of one or two of the larger cities to which provincial officials havo retired with their available troops. It has been Insistently stated hero that Kru K'ang, 150 miles below Hankow, Is under revolutionary control. This Is denied, however, by foreign officials and by the representatives of tho Chinese customs service. Accounts of tho revolutionary attack at-tack on Wu Chang, as given by tho refugees today, emphasize particularly the massacre of the Mauchus In that city. In tho slaughter neither ago nor sex was regarded, and it Is doubtful, doubt-ful, the refugees say, whether a single sin-gle representative of the Manchu race was left alive there. Similar slaughter of the Manchus followed In Hankow and Han Yang when those cities foil. Copies of the Contral China Post, which arrived on the Belgravia, describe des-cribe tho early progress of the revolutionary revo-lutionary movement. "The revolutionary revolution-ary leaders," )he paper says, '" displayed dis-played secrecy,' promptitude and thoroughness thor-oughness qualities seldom Bhown by the governing classes In China'. But the massacre of the' Manchus In our three cities is a ghastly blow on tho reputation of the revolutionists." Tho run on the Imperial bank hero still coutlnues, but tho officials appear ap-pear to have ample resources. Thcv aro now paying out for the first time the newly-minted dragon dollars from the mint at Nanking, the provincial provin-cial cnpilal. Their large roBorvo of Mexican dollars was completely exhausted ex-hausted by the demand early in tho week. ' J A Red Croasj: organization has been Started here. At- Hankow and Wu f"hanp Chinese women aro serving as Red Cross volun'tcorc for tho 'first tunc in history. Shanghai is a hotbed of revolution and rumors of plots and counter-plots are numerous: K formal appeal Issued Is-sued by tho revolutionary agents hero today says' "We appeal for tho co-operation or our brethren throughout the world.
