Show REFORM WINS IN PHILADELPHIA Philadelphia, Nov S. In one of tho most bitterly fought elections in tho history of Philadelphia, Rudolph Blankonburg, independent Republican Republi-can and popularly known as the "War Horse of Reform," yesterday defeated George H. Earle, Jr., the Republican organization candidate, for mayor by the small pluralltv of 4,364. The fight made y Blankenburg was remarkable Facing a normal Republican Repub-lican majority of between 75,000 and 100,000, and a candidate backed by United States Senator Penrose and Senator James P McNichol, the organization or-ganization leader of the city, this advocate ad-vocate of civic righteousness battled his way to victory against odds which would have deterred a less determined candidate. The significance of the Blankenburg landslide can be appreciated when tho total vote of 268,224 is taken into consideration. The closeness of the vote between Earle and Blankenburg was due to several causes, the main one being the bitter fight at the primaries between be-tween Earle and William s! Varc, in which the former won out by a large majority. Tho sores caused by this fight had not healed, judging from the vote which the downtown wards, controlled by Varc, gavo to the reform re-form candidate. While Blankenburg was successful for mayor, the other regular Republican Repub-lican candidates won, with the possible possi-ble exception of the office of clerk of the quarter sessions court. |
