William ("Billy") pelanoy, known all over the world as a famous tralnor of pugilists pu-gilists for the last half century, died j at his home hero last night after an illness of several months. The Immediate Im-mediate cause of his death was a disorder of the liver, but for many weoks ho hag been suffering from a general breakdown, which followed the contraction pf a severe cold while on a visit Jn'the east last year. He waB 58 years old and leaves a widow and two Bisters, the latter living In Now York state. Dclauoy was born In New York city and wns first identified with the ring as a fighter in Bowery boxing clubs. I Coming to this coast in tho lato '80b he began his career as a trainer by , 1 ' Inducing James J. Corbott, then a bank clerk and amateur heavyweight champion of the Pacific coast, to turn professional. Under Delaney's tutelage tute-lage Corbett gained and held the championship until It was wrested from him by Fltzslmmons, Delaney then had charge of Fltz-slmmons' Fltz-slmmons' training up to the tlino Fltz was knocked out by Jeffries, whom he trained for all his fights until the champion retired In 1905. Jeffries was urged by Delaney to re-enter the ring .and fight Squires, and his refusal to do this, and his action ac-tion in leaving Reno with sevoral thousand dollars of gambling debts , unpaid, brought about a bitter feud between the two men. When Jeffries finally re-entered tho ring to fight Jack Johnson, Delaney took charge of Johnson's training and regarded Jeffries Jef-fries defeat as a personal triumph.
