Show oo CANAL MACHINERY 10 BE USEO ON CHANNEL HOUSTON', Texas, Nov 7. (Special) (Spe-cial) Part of tho great machinery now being used In dredglug and cutting cut-ting the great ditch across Panama, will be brought to Houston to deepen and straighten the Houston Ship channel to tho Gulf of Melco. This channel Is IS miles In length, a natural na-tural waterway, and will be deepened deepen-ed to a minimum depth of 23 feet. Work on this huge project will be started this fall under direction of United States engineers. For tho work $2,500,000 has been appropriated, appropriat-ed, $1,250,000 by the Federal congress and an equal amount by Unrrls county in tho form of bonds voted January 10, last. These honds have been purchased pur-chased by tho National banks and trust companies of Houston together with tho city ot Houston which participation parti-cipation already is available. Tiio money derlvod from tho sale of tho Harris county bonds will be placed to the order "of tho secretary of war, who will direct the work. Tho city of Houston is constructing free municipal wharves and slips at tho turning basin, tho upper terminus of the channel. When finished tho ship channel will bring ocean commerce com-merce in greater volume direct to tho doors of Houston. Tho present tonnago of the channel chan-nel averages about ?50.000,000 annually. an-nually. A bill will bo Introduced In congress this fall making Houston a full port of -entry, Instead of a sub-port sub-port as it now is. oo |
