Chaso, nn aged man, J arraigned in Police court this morji-' morji-' Ing on a charge of vagrancy, stated I ha'ughtlly to the judgo that he did not need employment and that ho was i paying his way In the world. I To the city authorities Chaso Is an I enigma. For more than a year ho has been hi Ogden, yet never has ho made any effort to secure employment. Part of the time spent here has been spent in tho city prison, under sentence sen-tence or as a lodger. Chose vehemently vehe-mently denies that he is an object of , charity and contends that he Is one of the heirs In the Dudley Chase estate es-tate and that he will still aecuro his legacy. He states that It Is to secure money that he Is staying in Ogden. Investigation has proved that ho is ' but remotely connected with the Dud-loy Dud-loy Chase family and that his name was not mentioned in the will of which he talks. Ho contends that the chief of police and others of tho city officials are in league to keep him from obtaining his Inheritance and he vents his wrath upon them in the vilest vil-est of language. On a previous occasion,' when he was arrested, he was examined by a number of physicians for the purpose of determining if ho could not be committed to the state hospital for the insane Tho doctors, however, were unable to find tho necessary marks of insanity and the charge was not brought against him. When arraigned in court, Chaso assumes as-sumes a very Independent air and addresses ad-dresses tho Judge without any frills. Judge J. D. Murphy, in passing scn-tonco scn-tonco on tho prisoner, stated that the man needed some place to spend tho winter and sentenced him to three months In tho city prison. Chase left the witness cha.ir, in which he sat when sontencedydenoun-clng sontencedydenoun-clng the court and tho pollco officers,, stating that there were thousands of dollars being kept from him 'by the authorities. It Is likely that another effort wftl be made to have him committed to the stato hospital at 'Provo, |
