Pittsburg and Boston aro tho only Amorlcan cities which have considered the problem of city planning in a practical way, acco'rdlng to Professor George B. Ford of Columbia university. Lecturing Lec-turing before a popular audience last night, Professor said:. "It Is strange that the most practical prac-tical nntlon In the world should heed the cry for the 'city beautiful,' rath-! rath-! er thau for tho 'city logical, convcnl-l convcnl-l ent, healthful and business-like.' There are seventy or eighty cities In America that have taken up city planning, plan-ning, but only two have treated the subject in a comprehensive, practical practi-cal way. One of the two Is perhaps America's most business-like city, the other Is her most artistic. Pittsburg and Boston alone have kept prom-lnetly prom-lnetly before them In planning for their futures that a city Is essentially essential-ly a place to Hvo and work in. "Thus, attention has been given to housing, transit and transportation by land and by Water and to the location of factories. Recreational features, such as playgrounds, neighborhood centers and the location of baths, gymnasiums, libraries, etc., have been considered in relation to housing. Tho proper distribution of parks and boulevards and city embellishments, 'have been taken up with strict reference refer-ence to tho foregoing features 'It Is only by proceeding on a pro- .gram of this, sort that a city can fill 1 Its duty toward the next generation." |
