Show The morning services In tho First Presbyterian church were givon over ' to the children yesterday and a pro- i gram was rendered by the members I of tho various Sunday school classes. The church was prettily decorated , with roses and white carnations and every child was given a white carnation carna-tion as he or she enterod the room. The church auditorium was used for the services and the rostrum was crowded with members of the primary ' department of the Sunday school, ' These by their unison and motion songs, their solos and recitations, gave a most Interesting part of tho pro- ' gram. I Members of the Intermediate de-, partmont furnished songs, recitations and instrumental solos. The latter numbers furnished by Misses "Webster, "Web-ster, Freiday and Marsh being wor- r thy of a special mention. The boys' classes acted as ushers . besides assisting in the general program. pro-gram. , At the close of the services tho f ordinance of Infant baptism was ad- P ministered to several of the children of the church. The pastor made a brief talk upon the light and love of s life. This talk being addressed to the I children, was illustrated with several E candles of varying size, color and bril- l liancy. P In the evening at S o'clock the ser- f mon was upon popular and biblical u beliefs concerning salvation, thp par- tlcular theme being: "If a man does the best he can will he not go to P heaven9" In the introduction Rev. R Carver said in part; $ "There aro two separato questions 5 in this seemingly simple one Taken y literally and as tho words clearly I mean, we would unhesitatingly answer 1 "Yes," for if a man "does the best he ? can" ho will live up to the full light i of conscience and to the full of all the ' R best revelation he can secure. We h firmly .believe, however, that Jesus i ia Christ alone of all those who havo I ever lived upon earth completely did the best ho could It is true that theology speaks of original sin, and H it is also true that science adds all of B Its authority to this unpopular doc- RJ trine, as science reveals tho tendency r and power of hereditary and inborn i" I weaknesses. However, until a man ' arises who will completely do the best I g he can he will grant you tho argu- H ment. , Hj "The other question contained in H this popular belief of aalyatlon is a H most insidious one, for Jt renlly Is: Jffl 'If a man does as he pleases within Fa certain bounds will he not go to henv- fig en9' This question has its rise In the H varying ideas of what constitutes sin. I Now few today apparently consider g the failure to keep the Sabbath day 0 holy a sin Many do not call open blasphemy a sin. Methods in business B that are a little short of honesty are U not called sins by many In circles of G high and low finance. Impurity ot I thought Is deemed by many as not ! very sinful so long as the word and j deed are fairly clean. Yet each of : these was denounced by Jesus Christ 9 and spoken against both on account of 3 their effect upon the doer and those about him and upon account of their 1 attitude towards God. In short, it 3 takes two sides of life to reveal If we -1 are doing our best, the side of that from which we refrain and the side 9 of that which we do. No one ever docs his best when he merely re- S fralns from evil. It Is even more Im- M portant that ho exert completely and n willingly his potential abilities for ffl good. The first question then to be gj utsKiueu concerning cms quostlon is by whnt standard will you decide just what is your best. Does it Include your best efforts for making for bet-' tor things as well as your best ef- forts in denying and overcoming evil tendencies and customs. I 'UDoes-your idea of .what is 'doing your best' dcrjvQ any of it,s standards from this book which the world calls , the Bible and which derives for ua lfs chief authority from the fact that it-contains it-contains the life, teachings1 and "prom-' iscs of our best exemplar and guide, Jesus Christ?'- |
