Show AS TO THE FOURTH. t (,, ' ' s ' The question of how to best celebrate the coming 'Fourth of July is being discussed throughout the land. - A noticeable feature is that in every part of tho United States considerable attention, in fact, more attention than ever, is being devoted to the "sane and safe" idea. The propositions of having rousing big Fourth of July celcbra-tionsby celcbra-tionsby no means are being decried, but that phase of the celebrations celebra-tions which is apt to bring about painful injuries, if not actual loss of life, is receiving the attention it merits. The Boston Traveler editorially sums up the situation as fol-!ows fol-!ows : The growth of the "safe and sane" Fourth idea throughout the length and breadth of the country is encouraging to the mothers and fathers who like to note ilie presence of as many little ones July j o as were at roll call the eve before Independence day celebrating commenced, and with each adue quantity of fingers and toes. Since Baltimore pioneered the pathway of powderless Fourths, any number of cities, towns and villages have followed her lead-Denver, lead-Denver, Detroit, Minneapolis, Columbus, 0.; St Paul. Louisville, Omaha, Washington, Cleveland, Chicago and Boston are some of them. ' ' " 5 - They have successfully separated the small boy and the big fool , from cannon crackers, pistols and most other forms of fireworks, 3is-s55saasssa53ssHeesaaaaEs and at the same time lowered their death rate, hospital list and fire losses. Last year Columbus, Ov spent several thousand dollars on a fireworks display at the fairgrounds. Thousands of people were entertained and without loss of a finger! Cleveland, too had such a municipal display, besides all kinds of athletic games, races, baseball in the public parks all free. Minneapolis betook herself to "Tho Parade,' a public park, and there enjoyed a three-ringed circus and vaudeville combination, at which free refreshments were on tap for the children. Municipal fireworks, handled by careful men, finished the evening's entertainment. entertain-ment. No casualty list. This is evidently an established fact: That on the day of celebrations cele-brations we will celebrate somehow or somewhere. Independence day was made to be celebrated and celebrated it should be. More than any other legal holiday, it is a municipal holiday, a state holiday, as well as a national holiday. Obviously it cannot be celebrated in a state-wide sense, nor yet national', therefore it rests with the municipality. |
