Of UTAH STONE A report made by two expert stone men who have thoroughly inspected the granite at the Little Cottonwood quaries, made to the slate capitol building commission Thursday afternoon, after-noon, bhows that the granite In tho Wasatch quaries is of an exceedingly good quality and that it exists in ample am-ple quantity to supply all of the needs of the no wcapitol building. The two stone experts, Sidney II. Belmont and Robert C. Mitchell, J went to the W.i-satch W.i-satch quarries with the members of tho commission Wednesday afternoon The report shows! that a good qu.il Ity of granite was, found about two miles abovo the "WTasalch hotel and that this stone would be suitable for all purposes in the capitol building. Tho only question which confionts the commission, however, Is whether or not the stone can be hanrled at a reasoablc cost. ' It is thought that! the stone can be delivered at about $1 a cubic foot, hut the nintter of equipping Die quairles to handle it in BUfflcm quantities would mean a large! expend itur The rook must be quarried raoully to meet the demands of tho builders. The stone men gave It as their opinion that it would cost approximately approxi-mately $3 or $3,501 per cubic foot to quarry and deliver the ptone. The quality of th stone with reference refer-ence to the upheaval was discussed by tho commission J as to whether or not this would cause the stone to crumble on tho Interior and Therefore be difficult to surface. This will be thoroughly looked into. The commission also took up Informally In-formally a discussion of marble for the building and It was the concensus of opinion that Utah marble would N favored if suitable stone ran be found. The marble deposits of tha state will be Inspected with a view of findinc deposits that can be used for the construction. con-struction. The commission whl hold another meeing in a few days. |
