The long expected strike of -the furniture workers of Grand Rnplds. which has been hanging fire for several weeks, and which involves about G,006 men, was officially declared on at 9 o'clock this morning. Tac union men In nearly sixty furniture fur-niture factories, Including wood working shops, packed up tholr tools and walked out. Between G.000 and 7.000 union men, including, varnishers and furnishers, as well as cabinet makers and wood workers, went out. Some 3,000 other employes, who aro not unionized, are affected bv tho strike. The strike enmo to a head today as tho result of tho manufacturers' lefusal in a communication to the citizens' cit-izens' committee of inquiry to grant concessions to the men. k Ten per cent increase In wages, a nine-hour day and tho abolition of piece work are askQri.
