Show Are Y ou A Stenographer? The Government needs stenographers steno-graphers for National Defense. One is prone to think of National e'efense in terms of soldiers, sailors sail-ors and marines. But there are many types of defense work behind be-hind the lines. A large army of civilian personnel is now on duty du-ty as stenographers in the Government Gov-ernment service to take dictation of the thousands of executives and administrative officers, and transcribe trans-cribe it into typewritten documents. docu-ments. Some of this material is of lasting importance. Some of it will set into motion Government events of historical consequence. It is estimated that the Government Gov-ernment has approximately 85,000 stenographers, typists, and secretaries secre-taries on the payroll. Many young men and women are responing to the call. Thousands more are needed. Aside from the present emergency, emer-gency, the opportunites for stenographers sten-ographers in the Government service ser-vice are favorable. Good stenographers steno-graphers are always in demand. The positions pay $1,440 a year to start, with a good chance for advancement ad-vancement to positions of greater responsibility, such as secretarial postions, in the case of those who have ' the ability. The examination announced by the Civil Service commission for stenographers is open until further notice. The examination consists solely of a dictation test at 96 words a minute and transcription of notes. All persons who can qualify are urgd to apply now. The stenographer examinations are held at several hundred cities throughout the United States. In order to arrange for greater convenience con-venience to applicants, the Commission Com-mission is planning to increase the number of places where the examinations ex-aminations will be held. The proper application form may be obtained from the Secretary Secre-tary of the Board of U. S. Civil Service Examiners at any first or second class post office or from the U. S. Civil Service Commission Com-mission at Washington, D. C. To provide more living quarters for Government employees, especially es-pecially for those in the lower-income lower-income groups, there has been begun, be-gun, under Government sponsorship, sponsor-ship, a building program for constructing con-structing thousands of apartments, dormitories, and homes in Washington, Wash-ington, D.
