Show JAP LABORERS AVAILABLE i, u' '1 Sugar Company Will Pay Evacuee's Transportation Government Standards Must Be Met Japanese evacuees for harvesting sugar beet crops this fall in Cache county, are now available to Cache county farmers who supply housing hous-ing facilities and provide specified working conditions, Vernal Bergeson, Berge-son, of Cornish, president of the Cache County Beet Growers' association, asso-ciation, reported Monday. Action on the matter was taken at a meeting of the board of directors di-rectors of the association held last Friday night. The Amalgamated Sugar company has agreed to pay transportation costs of bringing the Japanese to the county and will recruit evacuees evacu-ees from the Abraham reception center or from Calilornia centers, Mr. Bergeson said. He advised farmers who need help for harvest to contact William A. Budge of Logan, general manager of the sugar company, or one of their fieldmen. To obtain Japanese workers, he explained, farmers must pay prevailing pre-vailing wages with a minimum of 30 cents an hour or an equivalent piece work rate. They must guarantee guar-antee employment for at least 75 per cent of the contracted working work-ing time. Minimum housing standards for the evacuees require that not more than three single workers or more than four family members be housed in a 12 by 14 foot floor space. Facilities must be provided for cooking, sleeping, laundry and sanitation. Rents must be agreed to before recruiting and included in the employment contract. "Don't depend on your neighbor's neigh-bor's boys or some other indefinite source of labor if you are goii g to need help for beet topping," Mr. Bergeson warned. "Contact the sugar company now and arrange for some Japanese labor." Mr. Bergeson said no action has ben etaken on the recent request re-quest by the county farm labor committee for the use of the abandoned Hyrum CCC camp for housing evacuees. The beet growers' grow-ers' association, he added, believes use of the camp "will not lx; necessary." |
