Ecuador, the little republic which straddles the Equator on South America's west coast, is entered en-tered through Guayaquil, visited fortnightly by cruises from New I York. Quito, a charming Spanish colonial city, the capital, is located in a maguidcent mountain setting 290 miles distant and is reached by rail and motor; or by Panagra planes in an hour and a quarter. This fascinating country with its lush green jungles, magnificent mountains, and lovely lakes is a paradise for the vacationist. For one thing, in Ecuador a few cents will go as far as a dollar does in many better known travel centers at the present rates of exchange and living and travel costs are unbelievably low. Then, too, Ecuador Ecua-dor combines characteristics of Bali, the Congo. Switzerland, Bim-ini, Bim-ini, medieval Spain, and the best features of South America. There is excellent deep sea fishing fish-ing along the coast, and alligator hunting in the jungle rivers. In the highlands, within easy reach by motor mo-tor of Quito which along with Guayaquil has comfortable modern hotels are towns dedicated to the weaving of the world's finest "Panamas"; "Pan-amas"; health spas; and Indian villages vil-lages where markets are crammed with gorgeous handwoven rugs and ponchos. Farther in the interior in Jioto Grtice Luis the dense jungles at the headwaters head-waters of the Amazon are aborigines aborig-ines quite as exciting as those in the South Sea Isles. Add to this a perfect highland climate and amazingly amaz-ingly beautiful scenery and you have indeed a true Utopia. Edna Mae Stake. |
