Show Gold Star Award Made to Lt. Noble Shooting down two Japanese fighter planes, units of a large enemy air force attempting to intercept in-tercept a group of carrier-based Navy bomber and torpedo planes near the Philippines last September, Septem-ber, has won a Gold Star in lieu of a second Distinguished Flying Cross for Lieutenant (jg) Myrvin E. Noble, USNR, of Smithfield. The 27-year-old Navy flier was decorated in a ceremony at the U. S. Naval Auxiliary Air Station, Holtville, Calif., by the commanding command-ing officer of the squadron to which he is now attached, the Eleventh Naval District announced today. Lieutenant Noble, who served with the Navy's famed Fighting Squadron Two during its tour of combat duty in the Pacific, was cited by Vice Admiral John S. McCain, USN, commander of a Fast Carrier Task Force, for his skill and courage in the aerial battle. "When bomber and torpedo planes were attacked by enemy fighters," the citation declared, "he skillfully and courageously engaged en-gaged superior numbers, and in the ensuing battle shot down two enemy interpectors. "By his prompt and daring action he contributed materially to the ultimate success of an important im-portant bombing mission." Lieutenant Noble, who also wears two Air Medals, has shot down a total of seven Japanese planes. He saw action in the Gilbert Gil-bert and Marshalls, New Guinea, Truk, Palau and the Marianas. The son of Mr. and Mrs. I. Elias Noble, Jr., of Smithfield, the fighter-pilot was graduated from Utah State Agricultural college, col-lege, and was employed as a junior range examiner with the U. S. Grazing Service before en. tering the Navy in March, 1942. |
