Show DDT USERS CAUTIONED Now that DDT is becoming in- creasingly available to the general public and is so effective in fly, bedbug, mosquito, flea and beetle control, a word of caution about its use is offered by Dr. George F. Knowlton, Utah State Extension Exten-sion entomologist, according to County Agent Lloyd R. Hunsaker. Although no risk should exist if common sense and a few simple rules ' are applied, carelessness in the use of the insecticide may cause trouble, the county agent explained. He reports that Dr. Knowlton lists the following rules to be observed in the use of the chemical: 1. Use highly refined, white, od- I orlcss kerosene, such as deofoase, as the solvent for DDT when wallpaper, wall-paper, curtains, carpets or clothing are to be sprayed, j 2. Avoid fire while using kero-I kero-I sene sprays. Allow rooms to air out with windows open, for at I least four hours before open ! flame of any kind is used, following fol-lowing extensive DDT kerosene application. Do not smoke while spraying with DDT. . 3. Do not continue to wear DDD-oil soaked clothing or injurious injuri-ous amounts of DDT may be absorbed ab-sorbed by the body. Wash thoroughly thor-oughly after handling or applying DDT spray materials, or following spillage on the body. 4. Never spray animals with DDT in oil or emulsion form. 5. Never spray or dust DDT directly di-rectly on food. |
